Physics Department/Engineering Machine Shop

The Physics Department in collaboration with the College of Engineering and Computer Science operates a fully equipped machine shop. This shop provides support primarily for the academic and research activities of the departments in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the College of Engineering and Computer Science. It also provides support on a time available basis to other academic and administrative units on campus. Faculty and students from departments in CNSM and CECS may use the shop, provided that they have taken appropriate training, and provided that they work under the supervision of the machinist.

The shop offers the following services and capabilities:

• Routine and precision machine work, including machining of vacuum components and exotic materials.

• Sheet metal work.

• TIG welding.

• Assistance with mechanical design, (CAD).

• General mechanical repair of instructional and research apparatus.

• Classes in basic machine tool operation.
