Dan Black

Dan and Kathy black receiving recognition awardDan and Kathy Black have been stalwart supporters of the department giving generously of their time, effort, and support.

Dan was one of the department's earliest graduates and shortly thereafter in the early seventies founded his own detection-technology company, whichhe sold a year later to start another enterprise in nutritional supplements. He developed that company significantly until his 'retirement' in 1998 when he returned to the department in grand style to help establish the  Dan Black Program in physics and business.

Since the program's inception, Dan has donated an enormous amount of time advising our students and working with the program's board of directors to develop the program while looking to expand it across the college of NSM.

Dan's vision is to have a new NSM concentration inspired by overlapping science and technology while keeping a keen eye on business venture.

Dan and Kathy have established a long history of support for the department including $50,000 per year in student scholarships. The department this past year completely refurbished its advanced labs with over $100,000 in new instrumentation.

In 2000, Dan was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award and was awarded an honorary CSUF doctorate degree in 2007. In 2006, the University renamed its Science Laboratory Center as  Dan Black Hall  in  recognition  of his major gift to the college of NSM. In addition to being a member of the university's Board of Governors, Dan is also a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board for the college of NSM.
