Physics Department Awards and Scholarships

---------------------------------------------

Faculty Prizes for Scholarship:

The department generally recognizes one or more graduating physics majors and one or more graduating MS students for outstanding scholarship in physics courses. The awards, which are presented at the annual School of Natural Science and Mathematics Awards Banquet, consist of individual engraved plaques. In addition, the names of all awardees are engraved on a permanent plaque which is on display within the department.

All graduating majors and MS candidates are considered for the award. No formal application is needed.

----------------------------------------------

Faculty Prizes for Service:

The department annually recognizes one or more physics majors for outstanding service to the department. The awards, which are presented at the annual School of Natural Science and Mathematics Awards Banquet, consist of individual engraved plaques. The names of all awardees also are engraved on a permanent plaque, which is displayed within the department.

All upper-division majors are considered for the award. No formal application is needed.

----------------------------------------------

Edward L. Cooperman Scholarship:

This scholarship, which honors the memory of Professor Ed Cooperman, usually is awarded annually to a continuing physics major. The amount of the award varies, but typically is approximately $300. The scholarship is presented at the School's annual awards banquet, and the name of the recipient is engraved on a plaque displayed within the department. Both need and academic achievment are considered in the selection of the recipient.

A formal application is required. Forms are available from the Department Office in the Spring semester.

----------------------------------------------

Constance B. Eiker and Raymond V. Adams Creativity Award:

This award, which is funded by a generous endowment provided by Emeritus Professor Raymond V. Adams, is presented to a physics major who designs an experiment for use in the department's teaching laboratories. The work must be supervised by a faculty member, and the student must submit a full written description of the experiment. Thanks to a recent additional donation from Professor Adams, the amount of the award now is $1000. It is presented at the School's annual award banquet, and the name of the recipient is engraved on a permanent plaque displayed within the department.

A formal application is required. See the notices posted in the department for more information.

----------------------------------------------

Robert W. Kedzie Prize:

This prize, which is funded by a generous gift from the family of the late Dr. Robert W. Kedzie, will be awarded annually to the graduating physics major who has shown the greatest improvement throughout his or her undergraduate career. All graduating physics majors are eligible for the award regardless of the semester of graduation. No formal application is required. All undergraduate physics courses including those taken at other institutions will be considered in determining the degree of improvement.

The nominal amount of the prize is $250. However, during the first few years of this program the amount of the prize may be somewhat less.

---------------------------------------------

Dan Black Scholarships:

The Dan Black Scholarships provide $4,000 per year in support to junior and senior physics majors. They are awarded mainly on student promise. These awards were made possible by the generosity of Mr. Dan Black, a CSUF graduate in physics. Both continuing and transfer students are eligible. For more information contact the Physics Department Office.

Norman Nitzberg Awards in Experimental Physics

A generous donation by the family of the late Norman Nitzberg, machinist for the physics department and the college of NSM, provides for awards to honor two students each year in the area of experimental physics: The first award is a $200 cash award to a non-graduating physics major showing the most promise in an area of experimental physics research, the second award is a major physics reference book (or two books) for a graduate who has excelled in experimental physics and the use of the machine shop.
New This is a new award for 2006.
