Assignment #1, Fall 2006
8/21/2006 (Section 1)
8/22/2006 (Section 3)
Reading: HRW 7th ed. Chapter 1, sections 1-1 through 1-7. This is a short chapter, but it should be read carefully. Be sure that you understand how to convert units from one system to another, etc.HRW 7th ed. Chapter 2, sections 2-1 through 2-10. Be sure that you understand the difference between "distance" and "displacement", and between average "velocity" and average "speed". "Acceleration" (the rate of change of velocity) is a central concept in mechanics. Take the time to gain some familiarity with this quantity.
Special Instructions for Completing Homework Assignments:
It is essential that you spend an adequate amount of time outside class studying and working on your homework assignments. A good rule of thumb is that you should be spending about three hours outside of class for every hour in class. For PHYS 225, which is a three-unit class, that means you should be spending at least nine hours a week outside class studying and working on homework.
You do not need to work alone on the homework. It is helpful to work in groups. However, you need to contribute to the group effort. If you don't contribute, you will not be prepared for the exams.
Although there is no prescribed format for homework papers, you do need to write clearly and legibly if you want the grader to give you full credit. In addition, staple all papers together and make sure that your name is written clearly on the first sheet.
